Youth Empowerment through Scouting, Service, and Spouts

“Our Beaver Scouts usually join around age 4 or 6. These are the youngest Saudi Arabian Boy Scouts.” I listened as the group’s interpreter translated for the Educational Supervisor, Abdullah Alghamdi.

“Are there beavers in Saudi Arabia?” I asked incredulously.

“No, no.” They laughed. “The word is براعم (baraa’em) … it means little buds, from a small tree.”

Women in Technology

In early June, Meridian International Center welcomed the “Women in Technology” group to Washington, D.C. The group consisted of 12 women from over 10 countries, including Barbados and Iraq. While staying in the nation’s capital, the women attended meetings on various technology- based topics with discussions on dynamic issues such as entrepreneurship and the role of technology in strengthening women’s economic opportunities. After Washington D.C., some members of the group visited Austin and San Antonio to learn about business incubators, while others spent time in Denver to explore renewable energy options and state-funded technology associations.

African Park Rangers and Wildlife Protection Experts Discuss Conservation, Anti-Poaching and Anti-Trafficking Efforts With U.S. Counterparts

In collaboration with the State Department, and as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), Meridian implemented an African regional project focused on fighting wildlife crime and conservation. The project brought together thirteen park rangers and wildlife protection specialists from nine different countries in sub-Saharan Africa to participate in a range of site visits and meetings across the United States.
